How does one go about figuring out a 500 error?

To clarify this comment: Planet Haskell runs on a community server, and the
admins have asked me to use their preinstalled Planet package (Debian stable)
instead of using my own source installation. When I used my own installation
years ago, I was able to diagnose these errors by printf debugging, but that's
no longer available to me. I can, however, copy the config to another machine
and do printf debugging there, but I'm hoping there to be a better way.
(Here's a feature request for Planet developers: give me a mode where it dumps
*everything* in the log. Including the HTTP requsets and responses)
